Air Purifiers address Health Club Issues
Air Purifiers address Health Club Issues
| Air Purifiers: | Allerair, 6000 Exec UV |
| Location: | Provo, Utah |
Since indoor air is enclosed and circulates around the same room, it can be very harmful for people to breathe if contaminated and. The air is trapped inside and once the contamination is apparent, the air has no way to escape or become clean. Although a large indoor area may seem to have safer air than a smaller area, that may not always be the case. Sizing air purifiers to the appropriate square footage is critical. Even though a large space gives the air more room and time to circulate, if the air is contaminated in the large space, it is just as dangerous as a small room of contaminated indoor air. Many public places and businesses deal with the issue of contaminated air. Some of these places of business are large rooms, which may be hard to keep clean. There are not many air purifiers that are able to handle such large spaces and keep the indoor air clean. Allerair's 6000 Exec UV, however, is a model of air purifier that is able to handle large indoor spaces.
Robert Hall, the manager of a health club in Provo, Utah was in need of an air quality solution. The club that he manages is equipped with a large Olympic-sized indoor pool. The pool itself is kept spotlessly clean and is often busy. There are many high school teams and private swimming lessons that occur in the indoor pool. Along with these swimmers who swim in lessons or for practice come a large amount of spectators. Moms, dads and coaches of the swimmers often sit on the bleachers on the sidelines of the indoor pool to watch the swimmers perform. Although the pool may seem clean, the spectators often noticed that the air quality within the indoor pool is not very clean. The pool often splashes water onto the walls of the building, which has caused mold to grow. The mold in the air has caused the sir to smell stale. The mold spores that enter the indoor air have contaminated it. Some spectators complained of a headache or becoming nauseous when they spent time on the bleachers by the pool. The mold inside the room was circulating over and over, causing these spectators to breathe in more contaminants. After hearing a few complaints and experiencing the stale air for himself, Mr. Hall knew he had to come up with a solution to make the air by the pool safe for the spectators to breathe.
Mr. Hall shopped for air purifiers and chose to purchase the Allerair because of its ability to handle a large room. 6000 air purifiers can clean a room that is up to 1800 square feet in size so the indoor pool room would be no sweat for the unit to handle. This model of air purifier is also equipped with an ultraviolet germicidal lamp. This lamp is very effective at helping the unit to remove bacteria and germs that may be present in the air. These air purifiers are also able to absorb any particles and contaminants in the indoor air. The 6000 easily eliminates mold spores from the air because it is able to remove mycotoxins from the contaminated air with the efficient ultraviolet lamp. Mycotoxins are what can cause people to experience the side effects of air that is contaminated with mold. These air purifiers are equipped with many different filters and compounds in order to remove bacteria, viruses, mold, particles and chemicals from the air. Keep in mind however that it it better to eliminate the source of the pollution or small rather than employ air purifiers.
Once Mr. Hall ran the 6000 Exec UV in the pool room, he immediately saw a change in the air. The air no longer smelled of musty mold and chlorine but it now smelled fresh and clean. The spectators no longer complained of having side effects of breathing in contaminated air. They complimented Mr. Hall on the cleanliness of the air by the pool. They were now happy to come and watch the swimmers since their environment smelled healthy and clean. Mr. Hall was able to run the unit during the nighttime in the pool room in order to assure there would be clean air present in the morning. The mold spores that were present in the air from the water damage to the walls were no longer a health factor for anyone in the pool room. 6000 Exec UV air purifiers quickly eliminate these mold spores. By purchasing the air purifier, Mr. Hall made the indoor pool an even safer and healthier place for people to spend their time. Air purifiers are especially effective when UV light is added to the technology mix.
Air Purifier addresses Nursing Home Issues
Air Purifier addresses Nursing Home Issues
| Air Purifier: | Allerair, 5000 Exec UV |
| Location: | Fayetteville, North Carolina |
Germs being present in indoor air are a problem that everyone has to deal with. There are many bacteria and viruses that are present in the air that people are exposed to on a daily basis. With contaminated air, the probability of a sickness spreading is very high. The best way to keep indoor air clean and free from these harmful bacteria is with an air purifier. Allerair's 5000 Exec UV is one model of air purifier that targets bacteria and viruses in indoor air. With the use of this model, many harmful contaminants can be eliminated from the air including pollen, dust and mold spores. The model also includes an extra medium that is able to absorb and eliminate bacteria and viruses that may be present in the air. There are many places such as residences and businesses where the 5000 Exec UV may be a useful asset for quality indoor air.
Allerair's 5000 Exec UV came in handy for the Fayetteville Nursing Home is Fayetteville, North Carolina. Carrie Anderson, the director and administrator for the Fayetteville Home, knew that an air cleaner would be the best purchase for the home. There was one room where most of the residents of the home spent most of their time. There were a few chessboards set up, a TV and many lounging chairs for the seniors to spend their time in. With so many people spending time in one room together, Carrie knew there must be many bacteria and germs circulating throughout the air. The senior citizens that lived in the home were also very sensitive to any dust or pollen that was present in the indoor air. Older people generally have weaker immune systems than younger people and get sick or react to certain contaminants a lot more severely and faster than other people. If one resident of the home was sick, it was certain that after spending a day cooped up in the same room as the other residents, the other residents would also catch the sickness. The bacteria and dust particles in the room of the nursing home were causing problems for the senior citizens. The only way for them to be healthier and able to enjoy their day in the room together is if the indoor air was of higher quality.
Carrie purchased the 500 Exec UV for its effectiveness and efficiency. The air purifier is able to clean a room that is 1500 square feet in size. Carrie was able to place the air purifier in the main room and it could easily clean the large room in no time. The 5000 Exec UV contains the same filters as the other effective air purifiers. It is able to remove particles, pollen and dust from the air inside a room. The HEPA filter and pre-filter inside the air purifier absorbs and eliminates mold spores, particles and odors from the air. Once the air has moved through these efficient filters, it is then moved to a UV lamp. The 10-watt UV lamp is able to eliminate the bacteria and viruses from the air that passes through it. The lamp is also able to trap and eliminate mold spores in the air and any other toxins that may have been missed by the previous filters. With the technologies of the filters and the UV lamp combined, Allerair's 5000 Exec UV air purifier is able to eliminate most harmful contaminants from the air.
After running the 5000 Exec UV, Carrie found that the residents of the nursing home didn't get sick as often. When one resident suffered from a cold or virus, there was no longer a fear that other residents would then catch the virus. The air inside the main room of the nursing home was more fresh and clean smelling. Since the unit only uses 95 watts of power when placed on the high setting, Carrie was able to run the unit overnight in the main room. With the unit running throughout the night, the morning air inside the main room was crisp and clean. The residents of the nursing home were able to enter the main room and experience fresh and safe air. The air inside was no longer full of toxins or contaminants that could cause allergic reactions or viruses to spread. Thanks to the 5000 Exec UV air purifier, the nursing home's main room was much healthier for the residents and workers.
Spring, Preparing for Allergies with Air Purifiers
Spring, Preparing for Allergies with Air Purifiers
Employing air purifiers for the relief of allergies is just one aspect of getting ready for a new season. The coming of spring is often a mixed blessing to the vast numbers of Americans who suffer from allergies. We're glad that the hard, cold days of winter are over, but have little enthusiasm for the coming months of sneezing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Most people procrastinate about preparing for the season so that it hits them with a vengeance and only then do they remember. If you had allergies last year, there's a pretty good chance you will this year as well. Using air purifiers alone will help but a more holistic approach will help even more with your allergies. WHile air purifiers can help while you are in your home you must be prepared to face the pollen and pollution outside.
The following are tips on preparing your life, your home, and your work environment for allergy season. It is especially important not to procrastinate if you have children with allergies. Children have a tough time as it is concentrating in school when the weather gets nice outside. When you add the difficulties from allergy symptoms, and the medications that may need to be taken, it can be especially hard for them to do good work in school.
Get started right away, even if there is snow on the ground. Make an appointment with your doctor or allergist. Evaluate the efficacy of the medicines you took last allergy season and with your doctor, plan a strategy for this season. Get your written Allergy Plan together. Many insurance companies (such as Anthem) provide calendars with month to month tips on addressing these problems. Get your insurance provider and your doctor to send you everything they have. A phone call is easy to make. It's especially important that you understand your doctor's strategy for long term control and for quick relief. They may be different medications. Review the filter life of your air purifiers and if need be change them.
If you are planning spring or summer vacations, get on the internet and check out the weather and pollen conditions for the places you are intending to visit at www.weather.com . Integrate these into your Action Plan. Don't let an attack ruin your vacation, simply because you forgot to plan for it and to take the appropriate medications with you.
Be ready by the first day of spring. Get into gear and get your home into shape as an oasis for breathing. There was a good reason people did major spring cleaning in the olden days. During the closed-up winter days, the home becomes heavy laden with dust and dirt, dust mites in all those warm, wooly clothes and bedding, pet danders and allergens, smoke, soot, and ash from fireplaces and woodstoves, mold from closed up spaces, chemicals from all the grooming and cleaning products used, and viruses and germs to boot. Get your home, furnishings, bedding, carpets, upholstery, and clothes cleaned up. Do the same with your office if at all possible.
Most importantly, if you smoke, STOP! If you work around smokers, throw a fit and make them stop doing it around you. Second hand smoke is poison to allergy sufferers, and horrible for babies and children.
Once you've cleaned up your act, keep it clean with room air purifiers in key areas of your house. The bedroom is undoubtedly a key area. Many allergy sufferers experience attacks in the middle of the night, because the human respiratory system relaxes during sleep. Things you can handle during the day, will be more traumatic at night. You'll want to keep a good room air purifier running in your bedroom 24 hours a day with the door closed if at all possible. You want to sleep in the cleanest room possible. It will help you survive the daytime.
Decide where else in the house you or your family spends a majority of time, and select a room air purifier large enough to adequately cover that space. If you do lots of cooking or grilling on an indoor grill, you may want an air purifier for your kitchen that can absorb chemicals.
With the plethora of allergy air purifiers on the market, which one do you choose? It helps to know specifically what you're allergic to. However, if you're not sure, but just know that you can't breathe easily during certain parts of the year, the vast majority of allergy doctors recommend HEPA allergy air purifiers. HEPA filters were developed by NASA years ago for use in the space shuttle. HEPA means High Energy Particulate Arresting. That means it sucks up the pollens and stuff flying around in the air. Many companies sell HEPA air purifiers, some much better in quality than others. The best have 5-10 year warranties on the machines themselves. HEPA filters have to be changed. When you throw one out you'll be amazed at how despicable they are and you'll be very glad you didn't breathe all that stuff.
Other types of allergy air purifiers use ionization or electro-static technology to absorb the particulate. These can be very helpful, but HEPA is still the best way to go to get the vast majority of pollutants and toxins out of your air. Stay away from air purifiers based on ozone generation technology. Consumer Reports says "ozone generators should not be where people are." Grammatically incorrect, but still a good warning. It means they are fine for industry, but not for people.
It is also enormously helpful if air purifiers you choose have enough activated carbon or other media to absorb gases and odors. Volatile organic compounds (VOC's), paint fumes, formaldehyde outgassing, ozone, and other such unpleasantries can be absorbed in addition to the particulates such as pollen.
Purchase enough good quality air purifiers to clean your home and mark your calendar so that you change the filters when they need to be changed. Some air purifiers indicate when a filter needs to be changed and some don't. It really doesn't matter. You can easily mark your calendar with the manufacturer's recommendations, and simply change the filters when it's time.
It's also helpful to get the filters in your air conditioning system changed before allergy season starts. If you don't know where to get the filters, simply get the manufacturer's name off of the system and call them up. They'll either carry the filters themselves or let you know where to purchase them. Many systems have electro-static filters which can help keep the dust down. However, they don't absorb all the pollens and other pollutants so you still need room air purifiers in key areas of your house.
Just because you have allergies, don't banish yourself from the beautiful outdoors entirely. However, remaining indoors between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. are a good idea, because that's when pollen is usually emitted. Stay inside on very windy days too. Wash your hair and clothing when you've spent a lot of time outdoors, and wear a mask to mow the lawn. Or better yet, pay some teenager who is desperate for spending money to do it.
In summary, if you start today and don't procrastinate you can face allergy season without cowering, pick solid allergy air purifiers, be careful as we suggested above and you will minimize your symptoms.

COPD Air Purifiers
COPD Air Purifiers
At ClearFlite Air Purifiers, we often receive calls from people who have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) themselves or are interested in air purifiers for a family member with it. Although various health organizations have different definitions of COPD, it is generally agreed that it is a progressive lung disease where the airways, the tiny tubes which carry air in and out of the lungs, are partly blocked which makes breathing in and breathing out more and more painful over time.
Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are two of the diseases which fall under the umbrella of COPD and often occur together. It is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and many people don’t even realize they have it. Many think of the disease only in relation to smokers, but in reality, even people who don’t smoke but are around smokers can have problems with COPD. Others may be at risk for COPD because of an exposure to pollutants in the air, a history of respiratory infections as a child, or even genetic influences such as emphysema in the family. Over 12 million Americans have been diagnosed with COPD in one form or another, but it is believed that twice as many actually suffer from it. Can an air purifier help? Air purifiers can certainly ease breathing by providing super clean air after you have the disease, however, medical treatment will be required for airways and lungs that are already damaged.
Prevention is always the best way to remain healthy, so placing air purifiers in your home, particularly in the bedroom, and in your workplace, if possible, especially if you’re around a smoker or live in a polluted area will help prevent airway and lung damage in the first place. But if you or a loved one already suffer from COPD, air purifiers will undoubtedly make breathing easier because your airways which are already stressed won’t be further stressed by having to filter out new particulate and chemicals.
ClearFlite typically recommends the IQAir and Blueair brands of air purifiers for COPD, because they are able to filter particles as small as .03 microns at 99.9% efficiency and even tinier particles .01 microns and smaller at 99.7% efficiency. AllerAir Air Purifiers also has some models that can handle large amounts of smoke and heavy particulate if you live in a polluted area or with a smoker. The sales representatives at ClearFlite are familiar with the problems of COPD sufferers and can help you to choose the right air purifiers for your particular living and working situations. All air purifiers are not the same. The one a homeowner might choose, who does not have COPD, but simply wants cleaner air, might be very different from the one that would be truly helpful for someone who does have it.
A note about babies and children. In babies, the lungs are the last organ to fully develop. It is very important to provide clean indoor air for babies and children so that their airways which are far tinier than adults will not be damaged early on. COPD robs children of a true childhood where they can run and play never taking a thought for their breath. Never smoke or allow anyone else to smoke around children, and provide quality air purifiers for the child’s bedroom so that the child’s tiny lungs and airways can fully relax and rest.
Best Air Purifiers on a Budget
Best Air Purifiers on a Budget
I. Introduction
If your doctor or a friend has just told you that you or your child needs an air purifier, you probably jumped online in search of a cost effective unit. Only then did you discover the dizzying array of makes and models, and varieties of cleaning technologies. It is important to understand that one of the reason there are so many units is because they perform different functions and attack problems differently. There is no perfect or best unit – but there are models that may best suit your particular application perfectly and cost effectively. One of the first things our callers often say is: "I want a model with washable filters so I don't have to buy new filters." The barrage of advertising for Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze (which is rated "disappointing at best"), has left the impression that units with filters are costly. The truth is that air purifiers which require replacement filters may cost more over the long run. The other significant truth is that if you don't buy the best air purifiers which will solve your problem and continue to do so, on an ongoing basis, you've wasted your money and still have the problem.
II. The Best Air Purifiers at the Best Price
Air cleaners with washable filters are typically great for absorbing larger particles such as dust. They are not particularly good at absorbing microscopic pollens, mold spores, chemicals, odors, bacteria, or viruses. Those toxins are better absorbed by technologies such as HEPA (which stands for "high energy particulate arresting" an acronym coined by the U.S. government). However, the adsorption capability of true HEPA air purifiers is recommended by a very broad range of asthma and allergy doctors.
At ClearFlite, we offer both. The highly rated Friedrich C90B works great in absorbing dust and heavier particulate. The HEPA air purifiers including IQAir, Blueair, and Austin Air Purifier absorb a wider variety of airborne irritants and have particular models which also do a superb job on chemicals and odors. The other huge consideration in choosing a model with washable filters is that… (drum roll please), you have to WASH them. Busy families have a difficult time adding one more item to service to their schedules. Retired persons, for example, do much better with washable filters. If you don't clean them regularly, they won't work and once again you've spent money without buying a solution. The best air purifiers at the best price is the one that will solve your problem and will require a degree of maintenance that you can handle.
III. Other Considerations in Choosing the Best Air Purifiers
Look at your living space and decide where you primarily spend your time. Your sleeping area is essential in the process of cleaning your home. We recommend you first consider the best air purifiers for your bedroom. The human respiratory system slows down during sleep and sometimes cannot handle the indoor pollution at night that it can handle during the day. With a bedroom air purifier, your body has an opportunity to breathe clean airflow for several hours and you will wake up less congested and more refreshed. If you only want to buy one unit and you want it to be big enough to clean a larger room, you can always roll it into your bedroom at night.
Most people do not realize that the best air purifiers are built to run 24 hours per day. With this in mind you can easily clean your living area during the day and your bedroom at night. Other options include a smaller unit for your bedroom and something more robust for your living room/ family room area. Unfortunately, you cannot put a unit in your upstairs hallway and expect it to clean all four bedrooms upstairs. Air purifiers do not go around corners and down hallways to clean individual rooms. (Unless they clean by ozone generation technology which causes a host of other problems, and which we do not sell). To choose an air purifier, you need to measure the room in which it will be placed and determine the square footage. Generally it's better to buy one that cleans slightly more square footage than you have so you can run it on the lower (thus quieter) speeds.
The other important thing to ask yourself is "what is the problem I'm having and what am I trying to clean up?" Is something causing you allergy or asthma problems, do you have chemical sensitivity, are you bothered by smoke from tobacco or a woodstove and is it the odor or the particulate that you're concerned about? Are you concerned with mold inhalation, do you simply want a super clean room for your baby, etc.? The more you think through exactly what you hope to accomplish through the purchase and use of air purifiers, the more likely you are to buy the one that will best serve your needs.
IV. Conclusion
Do not assume that the best air purifiers have washable filters until you clearly understand what the problem you are solving is and which technology is best suited to remedy it. Consider your schedule and willingness to use a high maintenance air purifier. If you want to turn the air purifier on and forget it, consider HEPA air purifiers. The higher quality air purifiers offer multiple year guarantees, even up to ten years in some cases. It will be more cost effective to buy one good one than to buy a cheaper model every year at your local home improvement store.

Air Purifier Technology
Air Purifier Technology
Air purifiers employ what seems to be simple technology on the surface. Effective air purifiers draw from the room with a fan, clean the air, and send it back out into the room. There are a number of ways cleaning is performed while in the actual system. First there is adsorption. Adsorption uses a media like activated carbon or zeolite. These medias are porous so that the airflow is exposed to relatively large surface area. As the chemical contaminates come in contact with the media the chemicals combine the media and are thus removed from the room. Adsorption will remove chemicals and some parts of tobacco smoke and odors but has little impact on particles. The second approach is mechanical filtering much like your furnace filter. In this case the room air is screened of particles however, the screen is very fine. An example of a very fine screen is a HEPA filter that removes particles as small as 0.3 microns. While air purifiers that use HEPA will remove particles like pollen and mold spores they has little effect on chemicals so this technology is typically used in combination with some form of adsorption filter. The third effective technology for air purifiers is electrostatic or now also known as electronic. These air cleaners use charged plates to give particles a charge of one polarity, positive for example, and a set of collecting grids or plates that have the opposite electronic charge, negative for example. As the charged particle nears the collecting grid it is drawn there by opposite charge on the collecting plate. As the particles build on the collecting plates the charging voltage will start to arc causing a popping sound. This is when you know it is time to clean the air cleaners plates in the dishwasher. Another effective albeit unique technology is a hybrid between HEPA and electronic. Blueair Air Purifiers uniquely use electrostatic brushes to charge the particles prior to being mechanically filtered. This allows the Blueair air purifiers to use HEPA with larger holes and thus get higher throughput. While not strictly a cleaning technology, in the strictest sense, we will address Ultra violet or UV light here. UV is a light that kills microorganisms such as bacteria and mold spores. This is always used in conjunction with other technologies employed in an air purifier.

Air Purifiers - The History
Air Purifiers - The History
Air purifiers come in all shapes and sizes and each one has its own unique way of purifying the air. The start of the air filter began with the fire fighters. In 1823, John and Charles Dean patented a new smoke protecting device for fire fighters to use as they fought fires. This new device was a filter that protected the men from the dangerous acrid smoke and chemicals that were in the air. The same type of filters became widely adapted to underwater divers as well.
At about the same time as John and Charles Dean were inventing and patenting the smoke protecting device, there was also a man by the name of Augustus Siebe who was just beginning to market his very own diving respirator which was a helmet that could pump in fresh air through a tube and another tube that could pump the bad air out. Siebe soon went on to found a company called Siebe, Gorman, and Co. and developed gas masks for the war effort in 1914.
In 1849 Lewis Haslett got a patent for a device called the "inhaler" or "lung protector". This new device was a great improvement on the other devices that had been invented before and helped coal miners all over the world.
In 1854 a man by the name of John Stenhouse made a few improvements to Siebe's and Haslett's invention. He decided to add charcoal to the device. Through this he learned that by adding charcoal to the air filter, it could filter out harmful noxious gases from the air.
John Tyndall, in 1871 invented a respirator to aid in helping fire fighters breath. This was a great improvement to the ones that John and Charles Dean have created in 1823; these were portable.
HEPA Filter Air Purifiers were Born
During World War II the United States government was working with radioactive material and they needed to desperately come up with a way to filter out all of those harmful particles in order to keep the air clean and breathable for their scientists; the HEPA filter was then born. The HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is one of the highest efficiency air purifiers on the market. It is designed to filter out micro sized particles. It is known for filtering out 99.7 percent of all particles that are 0.3 microns in size.
Once a classified item with the government, the HEPA filter has quickly become declassified and now resides in many residential homes as well as commercial businesses, hospitals, and dental offices around the world. In the fifty's and sixties the HEPA filter became very popular with those who were designing and building bomb shelters.
In just the last twenty years or so, the focus on filtering the air has turned to ways to purify the air as in home air purifiers. The past filters were great at removing foul odors, toxic chemicals, and noxious gases from the air, but they could not remove mold spores, viruses, or bacteria from the air. Outbreaks of the Ebola plague in Africa showed how important it truly was to be able to remove hazardous bacteria from the air by purifying it. This brought on the new generation of air cleaners and home air filters. These new air purifiers were electronic and they not only cleaned the air of noxious gases, but they purified it; removing bacteria, viruses, dust, pollen, and mold spores.
Today there is a large selection of air purifiers to choose from. It all depends on what your personal needs are whether it is just allergies, bacteria, viruses, or maybe you just want fresh air, there is an air purifier out there for you. There are styles that range from coronal discharge purifiers to plate or needle ionizers.
HEPA filters today are traditionally used in hospitals, isolation rooms, pharmaceutical, computer chip manufacturing, as well as in home air purifiers and business air purifiers. Not only has filtering technology created just HEPA filters, but there have been innovations on activated carbon filters that have been able to fit into smaller units for homes and businesses. The activated carbon filters contain pounds of activated carbon that is designed to trap and hold odors, toxic chemical fumes and noxious gases.
Through the years there has been many different designs and creation of air purifiers, each one better than the last; in an attempt to get clean, fresh indoor air.
Pets and Air Purifiers
Pets and Air Purifiers
I. Introduction
"I have terrible allergies but I can't possibly get rid of my pets, maybe I need a home air purifier." Since ClearFlite began in 1990, we have been continually amazed at the love and adoration people have for their pets, despite their adverse health reactions to keeping pets in the home. We've even had several customers who were struggling to choose between keeping a spouse or keeping a pet! Fortunately, we've saved a lot of marriages with the right room air purifier in the right place for clean air.
The problems that arise from keeping pets in the home vary considerably depending on the type of pet, quantity, and how much of the house the pets are allowed to roam. Another consideration, if you are considering home air purifiers to help with pet allergies is the type of symptoms you're experiencing. Below we review the problems and clean air solutions in each pet category, and we recommend specific home air purifiers to remedy them.
II. Room Air Purifiers and Cats
Cats top the list because huge numbers of cat lovers are allergic to their pets. However, recent science points out that it's not their beautiful fur which is the culprit. It's the cat's saliva which contains an allergen that gets deposited all over the fur when the cat licks herself. When it dries, the saliva forms a fine dust sort of like dandruff but much, much finer, which is dispersed through the air when the kitty scratches or a loving owner strokes her. It's the most unfortunate of circumstances, since the best thing about having a cat is being able to sit and stroke it while listening to that pleasant purr.
Hairless cats are finding popularity now, however, in reality there are no totally "non-allergenic" cats. Even hairless cats wash, and the dust accumulates on their skin. Cat lovers often experience hay-fever like symptoms including itching eyes, running noses, skin rashes, and other such unpleasantries. As with other allergies, it happens because the human body reacts to the allergen by producing excessive histamine, leading to a rush on the medicine cabinet.
If you can't part with your beloved cat and wish to breathe clean air in your own home, the next best thing is to keep a room air purifier continuously running in the room where the cat spends the most time, and if possible to either keep the cat out of the bedroom or to run home air purifiers in there as well. The room air purifier must be able to absorb both the fine dust and the floating fur, in large quantities. We have found the Blueair 601 to be particularly effective in cleaning up airborne cat particulate.
We also recommend washing the bedclothes, rugs, and other room fabrics often and buying litter that isn't full of dust. Donning a surgical mask and giving the cat a good combing outdoors or in the garage is also a good weekly plan.
III. Home Air Purifiers and Birds
Birds compete with cats for the top honor of driving their owners crazy. We've had many customers call with this lament over the years: "I just paid $3000 for my gorgeous cockatoo and I'm allergic to it - get me clean air!!" Bird feathers are interlocking and each time a bird moves the tiny barbs that hold feathers together rub against each other and produce a super fine dust. The bigger the bird, the more dust for your air purifiers to deal with. Cockatoos and cockatiels seem to be the dustiest perhaps because the are desert birds. If that weren't bad enough, bird urine and feces can also contain allergens that turn into dust when they dry and become airborne. In the wild, Mother Nature in the form of wind and rain helps keep the birds clean, but locked in a cage, both people and the birds themselves suffer from the airborne products of their captivity.
A room air purifier with the capability of absorbing the large quantities of super fine dust will help immensely in your bird room. We again recommend the Blueair 601 and the IQAir products (all models). If your species of bird doesn't have too much dander but the odor bothers you, the Austin Air Superblend models will help. Austin Junior home air purifiers are smaller and a nice size for bird rooms that are smelly but not super dusty.
IV. Air Purifiers and Dogs
Dogs can be as problematic as cats indoors although we seem to have fewer customers who have problems with dog allergies than cat allergies. Any person, however, with allergic sensitivities or asthma, may have problems with all animals. Dogs also lick themselves and the saliva dries and becomes airborne as tiny particles. The saliva may contain irritating allergens as may dried urine. In dry houses during wintertime, dogs seem to shed even more as any person who regularly uses a vacuum cleaner can attest. As with cats, there are no truly non-allergenic dogs, although certain breeds (like schnauzers and poodles) don't shed and make it easier to keep clean air in your environment.
Room air purifiers in the key living areas will help clean up the airborne pollutants from living with man's best friend. Keeping a dog out of the bedroom is always a good idea, but if not, using a home air purifier in the bedroom 24 hours a day is helpful, particularly if you run it on high an hour before bedtime. Bedding should be washed weekly at least. Electrostatic filters on the central heating system can work well with the strategically placed room air purifiers to clean the entire house. Combing the dogs out frequently (outside whenever possible) and bathing them helps too. We recommend the IQAir and Blueair 601 room air purifiers for dog dander. The electronic Friedrich C90B can also help if you are willing to clean the filters frequently. The room air purifiers with their odor filters will get both the particulate and the odors associated with family pets.
V. Other Furry Critters
"Mom, let's get a hamster!" Mom thinks, "hmmm, small size, don't have to walk it, easy to care for – sure! – but only one, no babies!" Small furry rodents (guinea pigs, gerbils, etc) also groom themselves, leaving saliva on their fur where it dries and flakes off. The animals in their small cages also come into frequent contact with their own urine which dries, flies off, and can contain more irritating allergens than the saliva. The kind and unsuspecting humans then pick up the cute little critters not thinking about what this does to the clean air in their home. Forgetting to wash their hands, they transfer the dried saliva to their eyes, noses, mouths, and skin. The dried urine or saliva on humans can result in sneezing and itchy eyes or skin. In wire cages, particles will escape and float around just like they do with cats and dogs. When they float by the human nose and are breathed in, irritation can result. If small animals such as hamsters or gerbils are the only animals in the house that might be causing troublesome airborne particles, a small room air purifier near the cage, such as the Blueair 402 or the Austin Junior will generate the clean air you need.
VI. In Conclusion - Clean Air with Air Purifiers
Pets enrich our lives and especially those of children and the elderly. Mammals living indoors (even humans – we shed tons of hair and skin that an air purifier can absorb) of the pet variety can cause allergic reactions in their owners. The degree varies greatly as do the times of the year that the animal may pose a problem. Winter can be difficult because humans and pets are stuck in tight houses waiting out the weather. Spring can be difficult because an allergenic might already be suffering from seasonal pollen allergies and the pets make things worse. HEPA room air purifiers running 24/7 in key living areas of the home (particularly where the pet hangs out), and the bedroom will remove a significant amount of the floating particulate resulting from dried saliva and urine, as well as fur and skin. Clean air is the the key to living with pets, a home air purifier in key areas will certainly help with asthma and allergy symptoms.
What is asthma and how do air purifiers help the symptoms?
What is asthma and how do air purifiers help the symptoms?

Asthmatic attacks can occur at any time. Some can be severe and some can simply seem like a shortness of breath. Due to this characteristic of the disease, some people are still unaware that they have asthma and need to treat it. If asthma goes untreated, a person may experience a decrease in lung function. The disease makes a person's lungs work harder and without help or treatment from an outside source, a person suffering from asthma will have weaker lungs. Air Purifiers can help.
There are many contaminants in the air that can be asthma triggers. Some of the contaminants include pet dander, allergens, pollen, dust or chemicals. When these substances are breathed in, asthmatics are sometimes affected and can experience difficulty breathing. An asthmatic affected by seasonal allergies may also find that response to the allergies can lead to an asthmatic attack. The toxins found in indoor air can easily be filtered out of the air indoors with an air purifier.
There are simple things that can be done to prevent asthmatic attacks such as keeping pets outside, not smoking tobacco products in the home or dusting all furniture as much as possible. However, air purifiers are proven to be the most effective way to keep indoor air clean and safe. Most air purifiers are proven to remove 99.7% of all particles found in indoor air. Chemical fumes, tobacco smoke and dust can be absorbed into the filter of an air purifier. With these contaminants no longer present in the air, the probability of an asthma attack is very low for the sufferer.
The High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters, or HEPA filters, that are used in air purifiers are effective in absorbing most toxins in indoor air that can be related to asthma attacks. They are able to remove 99.7% of all particles that are 0.03 microns and larger. These particles can include pollen and dust particles, which are the main cause of asthma attacks among sufferers. If indoor air pollutants are not removed from the air, they can circulate an indoor room with no escape. The pollutants are then breathed in and can cause a severe or minor asthmatic attack. With an air purifier, these particles and pollutants are absorbed and cannot be circulated throughout the air.
In a 1990 review of indoor air pollutants, published by The American Thoracic Society, it was stated that air purifiers containing the HEPA filter are able to remove a significant amount of particles from indoor air, making the air purifier and safer to breathe. Asthmatics who use an air purifier in their home are less likely to have an asthma attack since the pollutants that trigger the attacks are no longer present in the indoor air they are breathing.
There is no known cure for asthma and people diagnosed with the disease will have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. However, with the help of air purifiers, people are finding their asthma attacks are becoming a scarce occurrence instead of a daily struggle. By eliminating particles in the air that trigger attacks, air purifiers are helping people with asthma to cope with their daily lives. Asthma may be an uncomfortable disease but people are finding relief in the use of air purifiers.

Air Purifier Reviews
Air Purifier Reviews
Picking the best air purifiers is a tough task because the needs of each allergy, asthma, and MCS sufferer are somewhat different. So, we have provided air purifier reviews for each each technology type and manufacturer and try to give you a brief overview of each. With reviews we must be careful because the application needs to dictate the solution rather than a rating. However we have done our best at allowing you to compare and make your own determinations. The technologies we have covered include HEPA, Ion Generators, Ozone Generators, The Ionic Breeze, and Electronic or Electrostatic Air Purifiers. We offer products from Austin Air, IQAir, Allerair, Blueair, Friedrich C90B, Whirlpool, and Honeywell
HEPA Air Purifiers:
HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filters were originally developed for the atomic energy commission and are used in commercial clean rooms to remove particles. This is a paper or polymer sheet with very tiny passage that allow airflow to pass though the material but not much else. Since the passages though the fibers of the media are so small you need a lot of surface area for a reasonable amount of airflow to pass though the media. Therefore the media is always folded in an accordion or zigzag fashion to get a lot of surface area in a small volume. There is also a hybrid version of the technology that Blueair uses where the passages in the HEPA are slightly larger to promote airflow but the air is charged with electrostatic wands. IQAir offers the most advanced version of this technology.
Our Review: HEPA Filters work well in the home for trapping particulates. The only downside is that the filters must be changed every 6-months to 5-years depending on the manufacturer. The review of any HEPA unit depends on the efficiency (how much air by-passes the filter), fan noise, filter life and price. In general this is a solid technology that works well.
UV air purifiers:
Ultraviolet light in the right intensity destroys the DNA of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.
Air Purifier Reviews: UV is not sufficient by itself because it removes few gasses and no particles. Therefore we recommend devices like the Allerair air purifiers that combine UV with HEPA and activated carbon.
Ion Generator Air Purifiers:
These are small air purifier devices that put out a stream of negatively charged Ions. These ions charge particulate pollution and when the particle bumps up against something it sticks due to the electronic charge. These devices are used on US submarines and are claimed to make you feel better and the sun shine more brightly. They are also used in the as air purifiers in the poultry industry to keep the feather dust down.
Air Purifier Reviews: We used these air purifiers years ago in bird cages. They do work as claimed (except the "sun shining more brightly" part) but have two problems. First, the particulates end up on your walls so your walls turn black near the device. Secondly, since they typically do not have a fan they only work in a localized area. In commercial applications of this product a lot of them are installed to be effective. Note that these devices do nothing for chemical problems and some put off dangerous Ozone. Needless to say when we compare these air purifiers with the other technologies we would not recommend this one.
Ozone Generators as Air Purifiers:
Ozone is an unstable molecule of three Oxygen atoms (O3). Since Oxygen "likes" to be in two atom molecules (O2) it readily gives up the lone molecule and oxidizes whatever it bumps into. So, any particulates or chemicals that the ozone contacts are oxidized. This changes them chemically and is very effective in commercial applications like cleaning flooded home or those with major sewage back-ups.
Air Purifier Reviews: Ozone is dangerous if inhaled, NIOSH and OSHA have strict limits on how much Ozone can be in a work place (it is a by-product of welding and other industrial processes). Luckily the FCC has tried to put the clamps on the crooked MLM firms that market these devices as home air purifiers.
Ionic Breeze:
These devices from the Sharper Image use a set of charged plates to grab the particulates and stick them to the plates.
Air Purifier Reviews: The money that the Sharper Image puts into advertising these air purifiers is amazing. We wrote an entire review on the topic which is in our Technology tab. In general these air purifiers are not effective because they have no effective way to get the air through the device in enough volume to make a difference. The Ionic Breeze can wiggle ribbons but it can not move large volumes of air though the cleaning plates without a fan. These units do not work!
Electronic or Electrostatic Air Purifiers:
This technology has been used in whole house filters for years and is also called electrostatic technology. These air purifiers works much like the Ionic Breeze with plates but, there is a fan that pulls airflow over the plates.
Air Purifier Reviews: These air purifiers have been good price-performance systems for several years in most air purifier ratings for removing particulates. So, this is a good choice for allergy sufferers but those with asthma and MCS or odor issues should pick a HEPA unit with more chemical adsorbing media.
The following air purifier reviews are intended as guidelines only. Your budget, and application are also key when you compare air purifiers. Please call us to find the best air purifier to match your specific requirements 800-497-8263.
| Air Purifier Reviews by Manufacturer | Rating | Air Purifier Technology |

| IQAir: We rate these to have technically the best air purifier technology. They clean nearly 100% of the air that passes though the unit but are premium priced. | Premier | HEPA and HEPA Type , Activated Carbon, Gas Phase |
| Allerair : These are well priced air purifiers that offer many of the features of the Austin Air but offer UV light options. | Very Good | HEPA, Activated Carbon, UV Light |
| Austin Air : These air purifiers are great units with a very long life HEPA and activated carbon filter. | Very Good | HEPA, Activated Carbon |
| Friedrich C90B : These units are highly rated by third-party testing agencies. They are bulky however and are louder than the units above. | Good | Electrostatic, Carbon Mat |
| Whirlpool : These air purifiers are effective and surprisingly quiet. | Good | HEPA, Carbon Mat |
| Honeywell : Classic in design these units are a bit loud. If you are noise sensitive step up to a higher end product. | Good | HEPA, Carbon Mat |

How To Buy Air Purifiers
How To Buy Air Purifiers
Air purifier reviews to selecting the best air cleaner for your environment. We carry only HEPA air purifiers that do not emit or produce ozone. Beware of air cleaners that do not need filter replacements as many of these units have performed poorly both in our testing and in Consumer Reports. Since there are many different air purifiers on the market, please check our Buying Guide for recommendations that can guide you to making an informed decision.
The primary factor in the selection of air purifers is to address the allergens you are allergic to. Understanding this factor is essential in determining which HEPA air cleaner is designed to remove that particular allergen. If your primary objective is to remove the allergens, you should select air purifiers that sized appropriately for your room. Many air purifiers can remove the large particles such as dust and pollen as well as smaller particles such as mold, bacteria, animal dander, and house dust mites. A HEPA air filter is essential in trapping these type of particles and removing them from your environment. It is important to note that more than 90% of all particulates are 0.3 microns and smaller which is why a HEPA filter is the only solution to reducing your allergies. These smaller particles may include viruses, some bacteria and germs, smoke and smog. For the majority of the people, HEPA air purifiers are capable of removing 90% of the particle size range is the best recommendation.
Once you have determined which type of particles you want to remove, you will then need to select an air purifier that is sized appropriately for your room. We recommend selecting a unit that can cover a larger room so you can select a lower fan speed to minimize the fan noise. Smaller units will need to have their fan settings turned higher to obtain more air flow to be effective in removing particles. Many air purifiers can remove the large particles such as dust and pollen as well as smaller particles such as mold, bacteria, animal dander, and house dust mites. A HEPA air filter is essential in trapping these type of particles and removing them from your environment.
Our Recommendations
Air Purifiers America recommends air purifiers from IQAir or Alen. These air purifiers remove over 95% of all air borne particles such as: pollen, mold, dander and dust. These units are designed for bedrooms of 300 square feet or living rooms larger than 400 square feet.
Air Purifiers America does not recommend the Friedrich C-90B , Sharper Image Ionic Breeze or Oreck XL air cleaners as these units generate ozone which is harmful to the body according to laboratory research conducted by California DHS' Indoor Air Quality Program. See a detailed review of all air purifiers tested.
Air Purifier addresses Office, Chemical Exposure
Air Purifier addresses Office, Chemical Exposure
| Air Purifier: | IQAir, GC Chemisorber |
| Location: | Birmingham, Alabama |
Chemicals are present in people's everyday lives. Many people have certain sensitivities to these chemicals. When they breathe them in, they can cause unpleasant reactions. Chemicals can be present in workplaces, public places or in the home. Cleaning supplies, hygiene products and cooking products can sometimes contain chemicals that can be harmful or irritating to people when breathed in. There are also many careers that can place people in environments that may not always be chemical-free. There are many government or investigation careers that may expose employees to certain chemicals that can be irritating. There are also many manufacturing plants that package chemicals for use. These manufacturing plants may also expose their employees to these chemicals that can be harmful to their health. For people who suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, even if they have secure jobs in healthy environments, chemicals can still pose a problem to their health. As we will find, an air purifier can help.
One person who suffers from this condition is Jason Carter from Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Carter has been sensitive to the exposure of chemicals since he was a little boy. He remembers experiencing reactions to different chemicals when he was a small boy in grocery stores or even movie theaters. He never felt safe wherever he was because he was afraid of being exposed to some type of chemical. Now that he is older and has a full-time job that he's been at for six years, he still does not feel comfortable. He knows how severe his reactions can be when he is exposed to chemicals. He often gets a sore throat, watery eyes and feels dizziness. In order to not have to take a chance at breathing in any type of chemical that could cause a reaction Mr. Carter chose to purchase an air purifier for his office.
Mr. Carter's office is very large so he knew he would need an air purifier that could handle a large space. He also needed an air purifier that could absorb all different types of chemicals. The building that his office is in is also home to a manufacturing plant that can sometimes leak chemicals into the air inside the building. He noticed the odors of the chemicals and knew his reactions would flare up if he didn't do something to keep the quality of the indoor air in his office. He also had problems with the cleaning products that the maids used overnight. When he came to his office in the morning, he could still smell the strong chemicals that were in the cleaning products. He often experienced reactions due to the chemicals fumes from those products as well.
Taking all of these factors into consideration, Mr. Carter chose the Chemisorber from IQAir to keep his office air clean. The Chemisorber is equipped with a regular filtering system that is able to eliminate 99.7% of particles in the air that are 0.03 microns in size and larger. The filtering system in the unit also contains four filter cartridges with gas phase media. This media is able to absorb and eliminate many chemicals from the air. The Chemisorber is also a very quiet air purifier even when it is on the highest setting. He is able to run the unit and not even notice that it is on. He is also able to keep the unit on overnight so that it can absorb all of the chemicals that may be in the air from the cleaning products that were used that night. When Mr. Carter enters his office in the morning, he no longer needs to be afraid of having a reaction. The air is fresh and clean smelling due to the Chemisorber air purifier.
After using the Chemisorber, He has realized what a difference an air purifier can make for someone with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. He always thought there was no hope for him and he would always live in fear of chemicals. However, with his confidence in the Chemisorber, he knows he can walk into his office without being worried. The air purifier is able to absorb and eliminate these chemical fumes from the air and he can breathe easier and safer at work.
